Ways to Conserve Water

Things You Can Do to Help Conserve Water:

  • Wasting water also wastes electricity. The biggest use of electricity in most cities is cleaning and supplying water to homes and businesses.
  • Operate automatic dishwasher and clothes washer only when they are fully loaded.
  • Using a full dishwasher actually used 37% less water than washing dishes by hand.
  • Rinse clothes with cold water instead of warm
  • Repair dripping faucets ( One drip per second wastes 7 gallons of water a day.)
  • Turn off water while you brush your teeth. (5 gallons)
  • Check your water meter while no water is being used. If the dials move you have a water leak.
  • Check for toilet tank leaks by adding food coloring to the tank. (If the toilet is leaking, color will appear in the bowl within 30 minutes.)
  • Take showers (20 gallons) instead of baths (36 gallons).
  • Take shorter showers or replace showerhead with an ultra-low-flow (15 gallons
  • Don’t flush unless necessary
  • Install a low-flow toilet
  • If you have a pool, use a pool cover to reduce evaporation.
  • Drive your car onto the lawn to wash it. That way you water the lawn too.
  • Do not play with the garden hose.
  • Water plants in the early morning hours. This saves water (evaporation) and prevents the growth of fungus.
  • Don’t water plants on windy days. This can waste up to 300 gallons due to increased evaporation.
  • Use a broom instead of the water hose to clean the driveway, patio, or deck.
  • Don’t let the faucet run while you clean vegetables. Fill the sink and let them soak.
  • Don’t defrost frozen foods with running water.
  • Try to do one thing each day that will save water. Every drop count.
