Conservation Tips--Things You Can Do to Help

Things You Can Do to Help Conserve:

  • Replace a 75-watt bulb with a fluorescent lamp. This will save approximately 770 pounds of coal over the lifetime of the bulb (about 10 years).
  • Turn off all appliances not being used (tv, vcr, radio, computer)
  • Turn the thermostat down 2-3 degrees in the winter and up 2-3 degrees in the summer
  • Turn the temperature of the water heater down to 120 degrees F.
  • Use a ceiling fan. Turn it off when you are not at home. This saves about $7 a month.
  • Open the refrigerator door ONLY when you know what you want. Never leave it open and just look.
  • Use the microwave instead of the oven. This uses 50% less energy. (There are some health risks with this.)
  • Hang clothes outside to dry
  • Close drapes at night
  • Turn off lights when no one is in the room
  • Dim lights whenever you can.
  • Dust your lamps and light bulbs. Dust absorbs light you could be using.
  • Light-colored walls reflect more light and need less lamp light.
  • Buy a paper product made from recycled paper.
  • Turn off your electric blanket when you aren’t in bed
  • Buy rechargeable batteries and a recharger.
  • Buy things that can be used over and over instead of disposable items.
  • Make a scrap-paper pad. Gather pieces of used paper about the same size with the blank side up.
  • Recycle your newspaper and other paper products.
  • Drive less: carpool, walk, ride a bike, shop by phone or internet, ride public transportation
  • Obey the speed limit
  • Combine errands into one trip
  • Keep your car tuned
  • When shopping for a new car, look for the most efficient, lowest polluting model
  • Use a programmable thermostat that automatically turns off the air conditioner or heater when you don’t need them.
  • Add insulation to your home
  • Use a fan instead of the air conditioner whenever you can.
  • Buy a mulching lawnmower.
  • Give away your old toys instead of throwing them away.
  • Share books or use the public library.
  • Fill up both sides of a sheet of paper.
  • Use fewer or no pesticides, herbicides, or dangerous household cleaners. For some safer, natural cleaner recipes, click here.
  • Spread the word. Tell your family, neighbors, and friends about the importance of conservation.
