Dreams. We all have them even if we think we don’t. But what are they?
We spend about one-third of our lives in sleep. Few of us understand the importance of sleep and dreams. But both are extremely important for our physical, spiritual and emotional well being .
There has been much research concerning dreams. In one study investigating the importance of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, students were allowed to have eight full hours of sleep. They were awakened at the beginning of each REM stage. After only three days of REM deprivation, some students developed irritability, disorientation, hallucinations, excitability, difficulty concentrating, strange behavior and even some cases of psychosis.
When these students were allowed a normal night’s sleep, they spent an increased amount of time in the REM states for the next few nights. Their bodies knew and understood the importance of dreams. Some ancient cultures believed that during dreams our souls went into heaven to rest with God.
According to Edgar Cayce there are three main types of dreams: physical, subconscious, and superconscious. Many researchers believe that dreams are a way for the subconscious mind to communicate with the conscious mind. Dreaming of something you are worried about may be a way to release pressure. Dreams may help us work through emotional issues. Cayce felt they may even help us rehearse the coming events in our lives.
Sleep is that period when the soul takes stock of that which it has acted upon from one rest period to another.
--Edgar Cayce
Physical dreams are caused by noises, discomfort (too hot or too cold) or eating too much. These dreams don’t generally have great meaning unless mixed with symbols. Try to notice anything unusual. If they appear to be truly physical in nature, let them go.
Subconscious dreams are very symbolic and may be difficult to understand at first. These dreams help us become aware of our problems or may even help solve our problems. They are often trying to help us become aware of things we don’t want to notice. If a loved one is being unfaithful, or a friend betrays us, we may rest in denial. But our subconscious mind knows and tries to get messages through to us.
Messages about our health and our body may be symbolized by vehicles. Our mind and thoughts are represented by hair and clothing. Water may symbolize our emotions. Muddy water would be negative emotions, while clear, sparkling water would be positive emotions.
Superconscious dreams are known as visions, spiritual experiences (meeting Jesus or angels), or even ESP dreams. They tend to be messages from a divine source. They are clear, bright, and vivid. They lack the symbolism of subconscious dreams. They may take place on a mountain top or in brilliant sun light. These dreams should always be taken seriously.
