Tips to Handle Bullies

Tips for the Victim:

  • Tell an adult (parent, teacher, counselor) when the bully first starts bothering you. (At this stage it is a power play and an adult can help. Once the bully knows he can push your buttons, he will--over and over.)
  • If possible, walk away and ignore it.
  • Get friends to be with you if you choose to stand up for yourself.
  • Yell or scream to get attention.
  • Agree with the bully. “Yep, I think you’re right.” It throws them off-guard.
  • Use humor.
  • Confuse them with big words they don’t understand--then walk away. (My son developed this one!)
  • Always remember that bullies have very low self-esteem. Feel sorry for them.
  • If the bully picking on you is a boy (and you are a girl) he probably has a crush on you. Tell him you know this and it may embarass him enough that he will leave you alone. This also works in reverse.
