Parenting With Wisdom
Little Bits of Wisdom;
It's Better To Lose a Battle If It Means You Can Win the War!

Children today are tyrants.
They contradict their parents,
gobble their food, and
tyrannize their teachers.
-Socrates
Parenting is difficult in the best of circumstances. But parenting adolescents and teenagers is a true adventure. Like any adventure, it can be fun and exciting if you know what to expect, scary and frightening, if you don't.
Many teenage issues appear to be problems, when they actually aren't. Learning to separate from parents is a normal issue, but many parents believe this process is rebellion.
How do you know when to worry and when to chill out? Click here to go straight to the topics page, or scroll to the middle of this page to see the topics list.
This website contains many lists of signs and symptoms of potential problems. We also try to explain what is normal.The idea for this website was born several years ago when my teenage son went through a period of major emotional turmoil. As an experienced educator, I thought I would be able to handle these problems. Was I wrong?!!! As our problems continued to grow, I began searching for answers. They were not easy to find. Luckily, I knew many of the trained professionals in our area and I called most of them for help. But I realized that even with my professional background finding the answers had been difficult. What would a typical parent, without my contacts, do? This website was born.
It may be beneficial to keep a notebook nearby to be used for journal entries. Jot down thoughts as they occur to you. The subconscious mind often offers a glimmer of an idea or thought, a clue that may help solve a problem. But these thoughts may be fleeting, so write them down quickly. If you do not, they may be hidden from view and not resurface again. (If you find yourself getting angry or upset with any section of this website, it may indicate that your subconscius mind is trying to communicate its discomfort. Pay close attention to those parts, even if they are painful. They will be important.)
Our aim is not to blame parents for everything that happens to their children.If you are an average parent you may occasionally yell at your children, spank them, ignore them, or snap at them in anger. Your intent is not to harm your child psychologically, but this does occur. I truly believe that most parents love their children and truly do the best they can. Our main purpose is to help you do better. It's never too late to become a better parent. Learn from our mistakes. Even being overprotective is a form of child abuse. Who knew?!!!
***The following is a link to a website written for teachers. It contains stories about how children are abused by uncaring parents. These same students are very often let down by the government agencies set up to protect them. If you can not see yourself or your children in these stories, yeah for you! But if you can...
